With being furloughed since April, I’ve struggled to stick to a typical morning routine. I used to wake up, walk the dog, drink coffee, shower, get dressed, and drive to work, all between 7 a.m. to 8:15 a.m.
Now, if I don’t stick to a standard routine, I tend to feel groggy, unmotivated, and likely to sleep in past 10 a.m.
In June, I created my new “quarantine routine” that helps keep me going. Here’s a rundown of what my mornings look like now:
7:00 a.m.: Wake up, use my inhaler, walk my dog
7:30 a.m.: Drink espresso made by my loving fiancé, check social media, and complete a sudoku puzzle or brain challenge (I like to use the app Peak to keep me motivated and to track my progress)
8:00 a.m.: Work out and complete at least two challenges through Ring Fit Adventure on the Nintendo Switch
8:30 a.m.: Take a shower, brush teeth, get dressed
9:00 a.m.: If I’m feeling anxious or stressed, I like to fit in a few minutes of meditation (Smiling Mind is my favorite meditation app, and it’s free!)
What does your morning routine look like? Remember, don’t be too hard on yourself if you find it difficult to stick to a routine right now. If it helps, try to see it as a way to make time for yourself. It’s been challenging for me, especially on days where I want to sleep in, but it gives me something to look forward to when I wake up every morning. I can only accomplish one or two major chores a day now before feeling completely drained, but I wouldn’t even be able to do that without this new routine to start my day!
Now is the time to take time for YOU!
